AAJA San Diego Turns 30!

By: Irene Byon

AAJA San Diego marked its 30th Anniversary on September 24, 2016 at the brand new, state-of-the-art NBC7 studios.

The Board of Directors greeted more than 70 guests at the fundraiser on Saturday night with delicious cuisine sponsored by vendors, Lolita’s Mexican Food (http://lolitasmexicanfood.com/)and Zarlito’s Filiipino Restaurant (http://www.zarlitos.com/).

Chapter President and NBC 7 San Diego reporter Liberty Zabala moderated the panel.

Speakers David Ono and Jinah Kim took the stage and shared their wisdom, experiences and career advice.

Ono is an evening anchor at ABC7 Eye Witness News in Los Angeles. He showed video clips of stories he’s covered throughout his career. The audience watched in awe of his coverage of the tsunami in Japan. Ono’s fun but spooky piece on a haunted home entertained the audience and filled the room with laughter.

Kim got up close and personal with the guests. She brought her infectious personality by interacting and interviewing the audience. Kim’s presentation reached a broad audience by speaking directly to students who are just starting their careers, to young professionals who asked Kim about her experiences in local and network news, then to non-journalists who came to the event to hear about how Kim became and entrepreneur and started her own company.

AAJASD’s 30th Anniversary fundraiser appealed to not only those in the journalism industry, but also to professionals who work in fields in which they can benefit by hearing from insiders in the industry.

Councilman Chris Cate honored the San Diego chapter with a proclamation from the city, official declaring September 24th as Asian American Journalism Association San Diego Day.

With that recognition in mind, this chapter, though small, will humbly carry the responsibility to encourage diversity in newsrooms and help journalists of color succeed in this industry.

Congratulations to AAJASD for this honor!
